To use Power BI reports, dashboards, and tiles from your PowerBI.com account in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management, you need to configure Power BI service access to the Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management environment.
In this blog, we are going to guide you through the following steps required for the successful configuration of Power BI, including:
- Registering Power BI Service App to your Azure portal.
- Configuring Power BI in your D365 F&SCM environment.
1. Register App in Azure portal Azure Active Directory
First, you must sign into your Azure portal.
Then, navigate to the Azure Active Directory service and select App registrations on the left pane (as shown in figure 1).
Select New registration and fill in all fields as shown below in figure 2. To redirect URI, enter your D365 F&SCM environment address. After this is done, click register app.
The second step is to add API permissions for the Power BI service. Open the app you just registered and navigate to API permissions on the left pane (as shown in figure 3). Select Add permission. In the pop-up window select Power BI service from available services. Select Delegated permissions and mark all permissions (as shown in figure 4) and click Add permissions. Ensure that admin consent is not required, otherwise contact your administrator to approve API permissions.
The next step is to add a client secret. In the app you just registered, navigate to Certificates & secrets on the left pane (as shown in figure 5). Select New client secret, enter the name of secret, and for how long it will be valid. After you create the secret, copy the secret value immediately. You will need it later in the Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management environment.
After all these steps are completed, we can move to the Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management environment to finish the configuration of Power BI. Before moving to this step, we need to take notice of the App (client) ID that we just registered in Azure Active Directory. Copy the value of the ID as shown in figure 6.
2. PowerBI.com configuration
To do Power BI configuration in the Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management environment you need to have System administrator user rights.
Navigate to System administration > Setup > PowerBI.com configuration. Enable PowerBI.com integration and enter the values to appropriate fields from the previous step (as shown in figure 7).
After all this is done, save your changes and refresh the web page. After refreshing, you should see the Power BI Get started tab appear (see figure 8 below).
Click Get started to connect to Power BI account. You will be prompted to authorize a connection to your Power BI account. Click on the link to provide authorization. In the next step, you will be prompted to accept permission requests for the app that you have registered in the Azure portal (as shown in figure 10).
Once the authentication process is completed after submitting the permission request, go back to the PowerBI.com configuration to validate that you have access to Power BI resources. Select Options>Open report catalog. On the right-side pane, you should see all reports available for you to select (see figure 11 below). Mark the reports you want to pin to the page. You can do the same with the dashboard and tiles (refresh the web page to see the newly pinned resources).
For other users to see available Power BI resources, you need to share them from the PowerBI.com account. After all this setup is done you are ready to use all these Power BI resources in analytical workspaces!
We hope this blog has provided you with a better understanding of how to make sure that the Power BI service access is configured to Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management environment successfully.
