Cloud Migration: Why Your Dynamics 365 Business Needs to Make the Move?
Thursday, March 23, 2023
Reading time: 6 minutes
The cloud is such a hot topic today, and you have probably heard about moving to the cloud a thousand times, whether that be moving files or moving entire businesses to cloud-based solutions. But what exactly is the cloud, and why is it beneficial to move to the cloud? “Why” is somewhat easy to answer, – your data is stored remotely so you can access your files securely via the internet from anywhere or any device you might have. Simple, right? Easy answers become more complicated when we start talking about businesses, or when these answers have to be applied to business solutions. For enterprises thinking of moving from an on-premises office set-up to the cloud, the scale is much bigger and much more complicated, but making the move still comes with many benefits, including reduced IT budgets and staying innovative and competitive.
In this blog post, we will explore the benefits of moving to Microsoft Cloud for all business needs. This can mean a direct move to Business Central Online, a cloud-based solution offered by Microsoft, which enables users to access the software and their data from anywhere with an internet connection. Or alternatively, a hybrid solution can be used, such as Business Central on-premises hosted on Azure, which combines the benefits of a cloud-based solution with the flexibility, control, and customization options of on-premises software.
Benefits of moving to the Cloud
Why is this important?
With the rising cost of everything, starting from physical technologies and hardware to energy costs, it is becoming more and more expensive to run your servers in-house.
Why is the cloud a solution?
On-premises customers (or perhaps the Partners serving these customers) don’t need hardware to support Dynamics 365 Business Central installation, progression, or maintenance. This means they don’t have to invest in expensive IT equipment to achieve peak performance.
When talking about phased migration to Cloud and how that could be beneficial, Hauke Lamb, from Traser Software GmbH says: “It is a very good solution [Companial Hosting on Azure] for partners who would like to get rid of their hardware and responsibility, and want fixed price solution, where I know these are the cost and there are no surprises, and someone takes care of it every day.”
Why is this important?
When the conversations regarding the cloud start, security is one of the most important topics to cover. Cloud technologies require a lot of security investments to ensure that customers’ data is safe. According to www.techrepublic.com “More than a third (35%) of ITDMs reported data privacy and security concerns, while another third (34%) mentioned their organization lacked the skills and expertise to keep cloud data secure. One quarter (25%) cited securing and protecting cloud resources as a pain point.”
Why is the cloud a solution?
Having your own infrastructure may sound like it is more secure, as you can manage it yourselves, but in many cases, the cloud provides a much more secure environment. Cloud security requires a lot of investment from cloud vendors. This includes technological investments, certification, and very expensive personnel investments, and it is more efficient, in most cases, to trust Microsoft or the Microsoft Partner’s solution, capabilities, and capacities.
Why is this important?
When talking about scalability and performance, businesses need to consider how their current hardware and infrastructure can handle the number of queries received daily, hourly, or even every minute. Maybe it’s designed to handle maximum peaks, which means that hardware and infrastructure are not efficiently utilized most of the time. Maybe it’s the opposite, your hardware is designed to handle average amounts of load, leading to a risk of mismanaged peaks.
Why is the cloud a solution?
There are no worries regarding scaling your infrastructure and achieving the performance you may need at the given moment. You always have the right performance at the right skill set when it is needed. You do not overspend on infrastructure.
Why is this important?
Running a healthy infrastructure is key to peak performance. Constant and consistent maintenance gives you peace of mind that everything will run smoothly. Maintenance extends the service life of machines and infrastructure, therefore saving on downtime and additional costs.
Why is the cloud a solution?
Maintenance is usually provided by the vendor, so that is one less thing that the Partner and customer need to worry about.
Why is this important?
Deployment is a crucial aspect of any software project, and it can be a challenging and complex process that requires careful planning and execution. When it comes to deploying a customer’s solution, it becomes even more critical, as it can impact the success of the project and the satisfaction of the end-users.
Why is the cloud a solution?
Deployment of customers to the Microsoft Cloud is a standardized process that takes only a few clicks if the infrastructure is built in the right way. It is much easier and faster to deploy customers on the Microsoft Cloud, and the customers will always be running on the latest hardware versions.
According to Ugne Kontare, SOFT4: “the convenience to the customer, because it is so easy for them to get onboarded and run the business without major investments.”
Why is this important?
When you are running your solutions on a cloud you are always on the newest version. You can count on having the latest functionality, fewer bugs, security improvements, or any other improvements that are released with the newest version. You are always up to date, and therefore you do not have to deal with the hassle of complicated and costly upgrade projects.
Why is the cloud a solution?
At Companial, we have been doing a lot of upgrades. In most cases, the longer you postpone the upgrade, the more complicated it gets. In the cloud, you should always be running on the newest version, which sounds nice, but is not always possible. Therefore, hosting on Azure and running your current solutions on well-maintained infrastructure could be your way to the cloud.
Why is this important?
In a world where subscription-based businesses are thriving more than ever, knowing the exact cost you will pay gives peace of mind to both the provider and the consumer. The lack of hidden costs provides clarity and assurance for every party involved.
According to Ugne Kontare, SOFT4, “the pricing is very easy, just per user per month, so we know the cost that we will be paying, and also, it’s really easy to build the pricing for customers.”
Why is the cloud a solution?
Partners, or even customers, can very easily increase the number of users or upscale or downscale installations when using the cloud. We saw a huge increase in the demand for cloud installations and cloud deployments during the pandemic, when ecommerce businesses were booming. There are many different reasons for this, including infrastructure running costs and the convenience factor.
