The Skilling Shift: MB-280 vs AB-210, One Certification, Four Different Fates

A summer series from Companial Learning

Two weeks ago we opened this series with the big picture: Microsoft is rebuilding its certification catalog around one idea, AI is no longer a bonus skill on top of a role, it’s part of the role itself. Last week we got concrete with PL-200 and its successor AB-410, and found a fairly clean story: same skeleton, one new AI-first module bolted on the front. This week’s certification doesn’t offer that same clean story. MB-280, the Dynamics 365 Customer Experience Analyst credential, retires on 31 July 2026, and Microsoft names a single official successor for it. But MB-280’s content was taught across four separate training courses, and each one has a different fate. Only one is a straightforward swap.

What MB-280 was

MB-280 launched as the certification for Dynamics 365 Customer Experience Analysts, people responsible for configuring, customizing, and extending Dynamics 365 Sales, understanding the sales lifecycle from the seller’s perspective, and supporting that process with Dynamics 365 Customer Insights. MB-280 wasn’t a clean start either. In November 2024, Microsoft retired three separate certifications and folded them into one: MB-210 (Dynamics 365 Sales), MB-220 (Dynamics 365 Customer Insights – Journeys), and MB-260 (Dynamics 365 Customer Insights – Data). That consolidation landed right as Power Platform and Dataverse skills were becoming central across Dynamics 365 roles, which lines up with MB-280’s biggest single domain being Dataverse and model-driven app configuration rather than Sales or Customer Insights. Two years later, the catalog is reorganizing again, this time around AI.

The certification’s official skills-measured breakdown shows just how broad it was:

The one-line answer, and what it leaves out

Microsoft names AB-210, Dynamics 365 Sales AI Consultant Associate, as MB-280’s official successor. That’s confirmed, not inferred: it’s stated directly for partner-skilling purposes, and AB-210 carries the exact same partner point value MB-280 did on the Solutions Partner for Business Applications list. Swapping one for the other doesn’t cost a partner any points. But that’s a statement about points, not about content. MB-280 stood for four courses’ worth of training; AB-210 really only carries one of them forward.

AB-210’s five domains are entirely about Sales: configuring core Sales features for AI, optimizing AI-driven sales, qualifying and prioritizing leads with AI, developing deals through intelligent opportunity research, and extending Sales. There’s no Customer Insights domain. There’s no dedicated Dataverse-configuration domain either. Compare the two officially published skills-measured lists side by side, and AB-210 comes out narrower than MB-280 was.

Four courses, four fates

That narrowing becomes obvious the moment you check each of the four old courses against what AB-210 actually teaches.

MB-280T02 maps straightforwardly onto AB-210. Lead and opportunity management, the product catalog, closing deals, forecasting, Copilot for Sales, all of it carries forward, now wrapped around AI agents: a Sales Qualification Agent for lead scoring, a Sales Research Agent for opportunity intelligence, a Sales Close Agent for automating the close. This is the one part of MB-280 with a clean, traceable line to its replacement.

MB-280T01 doesn’t have a named successor. Configuring Dataverse tables, columns, and model-driven app forms and dashboards, the biggest single domain in the old exam at 35-40%, isn’t tested in AB-210 at all, it’s only assumed as prior knowledge. The closest match is AB-410. It’s not a full substitute: business rules, calculated and rollup fields, and Copilot integration inside the Dynamics 365 apps specifically don’t appear in AB-410’s modules.

MB-280T03 has no successor at all, official or otherwise. Customer Insights, both Data and Journeys, simply isn’t part of the new AB-series. Microsoft’s own position is that self-paced training continues and a new, separate Applied Skill is planned, but nothing is named yet.

MB-280T04 was never really its own thing. It was a lab day applying T01 through T03 together, so it doesn’t need a successor of its own so much as it needs its three source courses to have one.

What to actually do about that gap

If you need Dataverse and model-driven app skills today, AB-410 is the closest live option we’ve found. Take AB-410 for the fundamentals: tables, columns, forms, dashboards. But go in knowing it stops there. Business rules, calculated and rollup fields, and Copilot integration inside the Dynamics 365 apps themselves aren’t taught in AB-410, and they never made it into PL-7003 either, the other course that used to cover this ground before it retired on 30 June. That’s a real gap in what’s currently covered, one worth filling separately if it matters to your team.

What this means if you're coming from MB-280

If your background is MB-280, or the wider CE Analyst track, the practical read is: your Sales knowledge maps cleanly onto AB-210, that’s the one part of the old exam Microsoft rebuilt rather than dropped. Your Dataverse and model-driven app skills are better served by AB-410, unofficially, with real gaps you’ll want to fill separately. And if Customer Insights was your focus, there’s currently nowhere for that expertise to formally land.

And if your MB-280 background is specifically T02, is AB-210 still worth sitting? Based on the domain comparison, yes, but expect a mix. Roughly half of AB-210, core Sales setup, the product catalog, opportunity and sales order processing, is ground T02 already covered. The rest, the three AI agents and the AI-driven lead qualification and opportunity research domains, is genuinely new, none of it existed when T02 was written. One public beta exam review lists hands-on experience with the full Sales cycle as prep advice, which lines up with that split.
