The evolution of AI within Microsoft Business Applications continues to accelerate, and with it comes a new wave of intelligent automation. Among the most exciting developments are the Sales Order Agent and Payables Agent, two purpose-built AI agents embedded within Dynamics 365 Business Central. These agents are designed to streamline routine processes, reduce manual effort, and enhance the overall user experience.
For Microsoft partners, understanding how these agents work, and how they can be positioned, is essential when looking to unlock new commercial opportunities and deliver greater value to customers.
What are AI Agents in Business Central?
AI agents in Business Central are intelligent, task-specific assistants built using Microsoft Copilot Studio. They are designed to automate common business processes by interacting with users through natural language. These agents are not just chatbots, they are deeply integrated into the Business Central platform and capable of performing real actions, such as generating documents, retrieving data, and initiating workflows.
Sales Order and Payable Agents
The Sales Order Agent focuses on automating the creation of sales quotes and orders, particularly from inbound email requests. It interprets the content of the message, asks clarifying questions if needed, and generates the appropriate sales documents, all with minimal user intervention.
The Payables Agent is designed to simplify the processing of vendor invoices. It can extract data from attachments, match it against existing records, and post transactions directly into Business Central.
Benefits of AI Agents
Agents bring tangible benefits to both customers and partners. For customers, the most immediate value lies in the reduction of manual data entry and the acceleration of key business processes. Sales teams can respond to inquiries faster, and finance teams can process invoices more efficiently. The agents also help improve data accuracy by reducing human error and ensuring consistency in document creation.
For partners, these agents represent a new layer of value-added services. Rather than focusing solely on traditional extensions, partners can now offer intelligent automation solutions that are easier to deploy, more scalable, and aligned with Microsoft’s broader AI strategy.
Agent Enablement
Technically, these agents are built and managed using Copilot Studio, Microsoft’s low-code platform for creating generative AI experiences. They are embedded directly within Business Central and can be triggered by user actions or incoming data, such as emails received in Outlook.
The agents leverage several advanced capabilities, including generative orchestration, tenant graph grounding, and agent actions. These features allow the agents to understand context, retrieve relevant data from Microsoft 365 and other sources, and execute complex workflows. Integration with tools like Power Automate and custom connectors can further extend their capabilities, enabling partners to build end-to-end solutions that span multiple systems.
To activate and use these agents, customers must license the appropriate components. Specifically, they need a Business Central Premium SKU and a Copilot Studio Message Pack, which provides 25,000 messages per month per tenant.
Commercial Opportunities
This consumption-based model creates new commercial opportunities for partners. Beyond implementation, partners can offer advisory services to help customers estimate usage, optimise licensing, and manage costs. There’s also potential to develop custom agents for specific verticals, bundle them with support services, and create additional recurring revenue streams through newly designed managed services.
Summary
The introduction of AI agents in Business Central marks a significant step forward in Microsoft’s vision for intelligent business applications. These agents not only enhance productivity but also open the door to a new generation of partner-led solutions. By embracing this shift, partners can position themselves at the forefront of AI innovation and deliver transformative value to their customers.
