Learn moreWhy Microsoft's Validated Localization program matters for Ireland

In the first article, we looked at why the Irish Business Central localisation landscape is changing. Microsoft’s GB delocalization direction is moving local functionality towards a W1 + extensions model, while Ireland remains a Partner-localised market where local requirements need to be addressed through Partner-led localisation. For Partners, the practical takeaway is clear: Irish localisation should now be considered through the lens of long-term maintainability, upgrade readiness, and alignment with Microsoft’s Business Central direction.
That is why Microsoft’s Validated Localization programme matters. It is not only a label attached to an app. It represents a more structured approach to how localisation should be delivered in countries where Microsoft does not provide first-party local functionality.
A structured approach to Partner-led localisation
Microsoft describes Validated Localization as a programme where Microsoft works with an indirect CSP provider to localise Business Central through localisation apps made available on Microsoft AppSource. The programme is currently being rolled out as a pilot, with Microsoft noting that requirements and benefits may evolve based on feedback.
For Partners, the important point is that Validated Localization creates a framework. Instead of each localisation being treated only as a custom market solution, the programme defines expectations around the type of functionality included, how the app is built, and how it should remain aligned with Business Central over time.
It also helps draw a useful distinction: a validated localisation app is not Microsoft first-party localisation. Rather, it is a Microsoft-aligned Partner localisation approach built around defined scope, quality, lifecycle, and technical expectations.
What belongs in a validated localisation
The scope of the programme is especially relevant for Partners assessing Irish requirements. Microsoft describes the intended scope around three main areas:
- Regulatory requirements.
- National standards, such as address or banking formats.
- Local language requirements.
This matters because it separates core localisation from broader customer-specific or industry-specific needs. A localisation app should focus on requirements that are generally needed to operate Business Central in a specific country. Project-specific extensions, vertical functionality, or customer-specific processes should remain separate.
For Ireland, that distinction is useful. Irish businesses have genuine local requirements around areas such as VAT3 reporting, VAT invoice information, reverse-charge treatment, VAT records, auditability, and local address conventions such as Eircode. These are exactly the kinds of topics Partners need to account for when planning a sustainable Irish Business Central deployment.
Why this matters beyond compliance
The value of a validated localisation approach is not limited to covering local requirements. For Partners, the larger benefit is predictability.
Microsoft’s Validated Localization requirements reference areas such as the W1 Base App, lifecycle and support policies, automated test coverage, pre-release testing, breaking-change policy adherence, and data classification for new data model fields. These may sound technical, but they directly influence business outcomes: fewer surprises during upgrades, clearer ownership of localisation functionality, and a stronger foundation for long-term customer support.
This is especially important when Partners are reviewing existing Irish deployments or designing new ones. A localisation strategy built around W1 and app-based functionality is easier to evaluate, maintain, and evolve than one based primarily on customer-specific workarounds or inherited assumptions from another country’s localisation model.
Where Localization for Ireland fits
For Ireland, Localization for Ireland is Companial’s practical response to this direction. It is designed for Business Central online Customers operating in Ireland and supports Irish localisation needs within the Validated Localization programme.
This means Partners should view Localization for Ireland not only as a product feature set, but as part of a broader localisation strategy. The aim is to help Partners move Irish deployments towards a more standardised, maintainable, and Microsoft-aligned approach – while still addressing the local requirements Irish Customers expect their ERP system to support.
What Partners should do now
After reviewing the market change, the next step is to consider whether your Irish localisation approach is aligned with this model.
Partners should assess:
- Whether current Irish deployments are built on assumptions that may become harder to maintain.
- Whether future Irish projects are being designed around W1 from the start.
- Whether localisation functionality is handled through a standard app-based approach.
- Whether the chosen approach supports future Business Central updates.
- Whether customer conversations are framed around planning, maintainability, and upgrade readiness.
The key message is simple: Validated Localization matters because it gives Partners a clearer way to think about localisation in markets like Ireland. It connects Microsoft’s W1 direction with the practical need for local functionality and helps Partners plan Irish deployments with more confidence.
In the next article, we will look at what Localization for Ireland includes and how it supports Irish compliance and operational requirements in Business Central.
